Nigerians Must Fulfil Tax Obligations to Demand Accountability – NOA
The National Orientation Agency has called on Nigerians to cultivate a stronger culture of tax compliance, noting that citizens who pay taxes are better placed to demand accountability from those in government.

The agency explained that taxation is a key element of the social contract between citizens and the government, where individuals contribute financially to national development while expecting transparency and responsible use of public funds.

According to the agency, when citizens actively fulfill their tax obligations, they gain stronger moral authority to question how public resources are managed and to demand improved governance.

The call comes amid ongoing discussions around tax reforms and the need to broaden Nigeria’s tax base to improve revenue generation and national development.

Experts say taxation remains one of the most reliable sources of government revenue used to fund infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential public services.

However, studies show that a relatively small proportion of Nigerians currently pay taxes, even though citizens widely expect the government to provide essential infrastructure and services.

Analysts believe that strengthening tax compliance and improving transparency in the use of public funds will help build trust between citizens and the government while promoting accountability in governance.
