The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Federal Government to introduce a cost-of-living allowance, wage award, and tax relief for workers to mitigate the economic hardship caused by the recent increase in fuel prices.
The labour union said the demand became necessary following the rising cost of petrol, which has significantly increased the cost of transportation, food, and other essential goods across the country.
According to the congress, the sharp increase in fuel prices was largely influenced by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which has contributed to a surge in global crude oil prices and energy costs.
Labour leaders noted that the current economic pressure is placing a heavy burden on workers, many of whom are already struggling with rising inflation and the high cost of living.
The union stressed that introducing a cost-of-living allowance and wage award would provide immediate financial relief to workers while longer-term economic measures are implemented.
In addition, the NLC urged the government to consider tax relief policies that would reduce the financial burden on employees and improve their disposable income.
The congress emphasized that supporting workers during periods of economic strain is essential to maintaining productivity, social stability, and economic growth in the country.
