Ondo Imposes Okada Ban in 18 Local Government Areas
The Ondo State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, in 18 local government areas of the state as part of renewed efforts to tackle insecurity.

The decision followed growing concerns about the use of motorcycles by criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in different parts of the state. Security reports indicated that many attackers often rely on motorcycles for quick mobility during operations and escape.

Authorities explained that restricting motorcycle movements would help security agencies track suspicious activities more effectively and reduce the operational advantage criminals gain from using bikes.

Government officials said the directive would be strictly enforced by security agencies across the affected local governments, warning that violators risk having their motorcycles seized and facing prosecution.

The ban forms part of broader security measures recently introduced by the state, including intensified surveillance, deployment of security operatives, and collaboration with local communities and traditional rulers to report suspicious activities.

Officials also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and comply with the directive, emphasizing that the move is aimed at protecting lives and property.

Security experts note that several Nigerian states have previously implemented similar restrictions on commercial motorcycles in response to security threats, particularly where bikes are frequently used by criminals to evade law enforcement.
