The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has called on religious leaders across faiths to halt all night worship services for now, citing serious security challenges in the region.
State Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal made the appeal in Akure on Friday, following the midnight abduction of six worshippers from a Celestial Church along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Owo Local Government Area.
Lawal said that among those taken were pregnant women and a physically challenged person, and that one worshipper has been rescued while one informant was arrested. He noted that it is easier for security agencies to monitor religious activities during the day than at night.
The commissioner also emphasised the importance of religious leaders informing the police ahead of any special late-hour gatherings so security assessments can be carried out.
“With the current security situation, we have advised that worship activities be moved to daytime for now and that organisers keep us informed so the command can provide necessary guidance and support,” Lawal said.
Police warned that the measure is temporary but necessary to safeguard worshippers until the threat level improves.
