Only Billionaires Can Run For Office Falana Faults Nigerias Political Financing Structure

Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has raised concerns over the prohibitive cost of seeking elective positions in the country. Speaking on the current political landscape, Falana argued that the existing financing structure has turned Nigerian democracy into an exclusive club for the wealthy. He noted that the high prices set for nomination forms and the massive spending required for campaigns make it nearly impossible for ordinary citizens to compete.

Falana emphasized that when the entry barrier to politics is restricted to billionaires, the quality of governance suffers as competent individuals with fresh ideas are sidelined. He pointed out that this system encourages corruption, as candidates often seek out godfathers or spend their personal fortunes with the expectation of recouping their investments once they assume office. This cycle, according to the legal luminary, undermines the very essence of representative government.

The senior lawyer called on the Independent National Electoral Commission and the National Assembly to introduce strict regulations on campaign spending and the cost of nomination forms. Falana suggested that unless there is a radical shift toward a more inclusive and less expensive political process, the Nigerian masses will continue to be ruled by a plutocracy rather than a democracy. He urged civil society groups to mobilize and demand reforms that would allow credible candidates from all walks of life to participate in the electoral process.
