The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to introduce a transport subsidy to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on Nigerians.
The association noted that the recent surge in petrol prices has significantly increased transportation costs, which in turn has affected the prices of goods and services across the country.
PETROAN explained that the subsidy would help reduce the burden on commuters and businesses, particularly those that rely heavily on transportation for daily operations.
Industry stakeholders warned that higher fuel prices are already driving up transport fares and food prices, worsening the cost-of-living crisis faced by many Nigerians.
The association stressed that targeted interventions such as transport subsidies could provide immediate relief to citizens while allowing the government to maintain its deregulation policy in the downstream sector.
Experts say transportation remains one of the most sensitive sectors affected by fuel price increases, as it directly influences inflation and household spending.
PETROAN therefore urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further economic strain, noting that without intervention, the rising cost of fuel could continue to deepen hardship nationwide.
