Police begin probe into student shooting incident in Osun
The Osun State Police Command says it has opened a full review and ordered a detailed investigation into allegations that a student and his family were shot at and chased in Osogbo.

In a statement issued on Monday by police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, the command said it acted after a viral video surfaced and after a press statement by the National Association of Nigerian Students (Southwest Zone D) dated February 22, 2026, drew attention to the alleged incident.

“The attention of Osun State Police said the reported shooting and pursuit, said to have occurred along the Itaolokan Junction to Oke Ayepe axis, is now being examined, with initial findings already being compiled. According to the statement, investigators are reviewing operational records and gathering eyewitness accounts.

The command also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, through the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims in hospital. Ojelabi added that the victims are responding to treatment and that the police have taken responsibility for their medical bills.

Police said officers suspected to be involved are under investigation, warning that any unauthorised or reckless use of firearms, if proven, will not be tolerated and will attract disciplinary action.

The command urged members of the public with credible information or video evidence to come forward, assuring that the case will be pursued strictly on facts and evidence, while also appealing for calm.
