The Presidency has explained that former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun resigned from his position to allow the Federal Government to continue ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force without interruption.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity said Egbetokun “voluntarily resigned” in the “national interest” to promote continuity and stability as critical police reforms take shape.
The presidency emphasised that the move was driven by the need for seamless progression of institutional changes and not due to disciplinary or legal issues.
The outgoing IGP was said to have tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu, who accepted it in the interest of the ongoing transformation of the security architecture.
Details of the resignation letter and its effective date were not disclosed in the statement.
The development comes amid the appointment of Tunji Disu — a senior police officer — as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police, tasked with continuing the reform agenda.
The Presidency said it remains committed to strengthening law enforcement and enhancing the operational capacity of the police to address security challenges nationwide.
