The Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu Ode has appealed to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to lift the suspension on the selection process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland and allow the kingmakers to complete the task.
Speaking on Sunday, the head of the ruling house, Abdulateef Owoyemi, said members of the royal family — both in Nigeria and in the diaspora — are frustrated by the indefinite halt and are eager for the process to be concluded soon.
Owoyemi described the kingmakers as men of integrity and urged that “no distraction” should prevent the selection of the new monarch, stressing that many people are waiting for leadership and guidance, particularly with major cultural events ahead.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years. Candidate nominations took place with dozens of princes and princesses from the Fusengbuwa house, but the selection process was halted amid numerous petitions and concerns over the procedure.
The state government previously denied rumours that it had endorsed any candidate and reaffirmed that the succession process is guided strictly by law and traditional customs, noting that the halt allows for a review to ensure transparency and fairness.
As traditional and cultural expectations build, calls from the ruling house underscore the urgency to reopen and complete the process, with many stakeholders hoping for a peaceful and lawful resolution.
