President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as Nigeria’s police chief.
Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation on Tuesday, with the former IGP citing personal and family considerations. The change is part of the Federal Government’s strategy to strengthen security leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Disu, previously a senior Assistant Inspector-General, has a record that includes leadership roles in tactical and investigative units, and his appointment is intended to provide focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during a critical security period.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu will soon convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The leadership shake-up also risks prompting the retirement of several Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and senior officers to align the force’s hierarchy with the new acting IGP’s command.
Observers see the move as a key part of efforts to address persistent security challenges nationwide and ensure stability as the country prepares for its next major electoral cycle.
