US Issues Security Alert in Nigeria as Shi’ite Protests Erupt Over Iran–Israel–US Conflict
The United States government has issued a security alert for its citizens in Nigeria as geopolitical tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran ripple into local reactions, authorities confirmed.

In a warning released this week, the US government urged Americans living in or visiting Nigeria and other countries to exercise heightened caution and stay aware of their surroundings amid ongoing military developments in the Middle East. The advisory follows global alerts encouraging vigilance due to potential travel disruptions and heightened unrest linked to the conflict.

The alert coincides with peaceful demonstrations by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) — also known as Shi’ite Muslims — in Lagos and other states. Protesters have taken to the streets to condemn the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in alleged US–Israeli strikes, demanding justice and expressing solidarity with Iran.

In Lagos, demonstrators knelt in the streets, carried candles and portraits of the late Iranian leader, and halted traffic for a period before police monitored the situation to prevent escalation. Similar peaceful protests have been reported in northern states including Gombe, Kano and Yobe

Security agencies have been placed on alert nationwide, with the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, directing heightened surveillance and proactive patrols to prevent tensions from spilling into unrest. Officials emphasised that Nigeria will not be a theatre for foreign conflicts and urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has also issued advisories to Nigerian nationals in Iran and the Gulf region to stay vigilant and comply with local security directives, as the volatile situation persists.

The combined alerts reflect growing concerns that global conflicts, even far from Nigeria’s borders, can spark reactions on Nigerian soil or affect the safety of foreigners and locals alike.
