The United States and Venezuela have agreed to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations, marking a major shift in ties between the two countries after years of strained relations.
In a joint statement, both sides said the move would help promote stability, support economic recovery, and advance political reconciliation in Venezuela.
The development follows a dramatic political upheaval earlier in the year, when U.S. forces carried out a surprise operation in January that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. After the operation, Delcy Rodríguez assumed power as interim president, and diplomatic engagement between the two countries gradually resumed.
Officials say restoring relations will allow both governments to work together on rebuilding Venezuela’s economy and preparing the ground for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government.
The announcement is particularly symbolic because formal diplomatic ties had been severed since 2019, when relations deteriorated amid political tensions and sanctions.
The renewed engagement could also open the door to greater cooperation in Venezuela’s oil and mining sectors, with U.S. officials already discussing foreign investment and economic reforms with Caracas.
