A severe traffic gridlock has left hundreds of motorists stranded for hours along the busy Abuja–Lokoja highway as Easter travel intensifies.
The congestion, which began building up ahead of the holiday, affected a major stretch of the road linking the Federal Capital Territory to parts of the North Central and southern regions of Nigeria. Many commuters were trapped in traffic for extended periods, with little or no movement.
Reports indicate that the gridlock is a recurring issue during festive seasons, with increased travel volume worsening existing challenges on the highway. Some travellers recalled experiencing similar delays during previous holidays, including Christmas periods.
Motorists attributed the situation to several factors, including poor road conditions, ongoing construction work, and impatience among drivers, which often leads to traffic disorder.
Several travellers shared their frustrations, noting that journeys that should take a few hours stretched into an overnight ordeal. In some cases, commuters remained stuck on the road for more than 24 hours, with many forced to abandon their vehicles temporarily in search of alternative routes.
Stakeholders have raised concerns about the long-standing state of the highway, describing it as a critical economic route that facilitates the movement of goods such as food, fuel, and manufactured products across regions.
Calls have been made for urgent government intervention to address the deteriorating condition of the road and implement effective traffic management strategies, especially during peak travel periods.
