Labour Pushes for ₦154,000 Minimum Wage Amid Rising Hardship
Organised Labour in Nigeria is pushing for a new minimum wage of ₦154,000, citing the severe economic hardship facing workers across the country.

The demand comes amid rising inflation, increasing fuel prices, and the soaring cost of basic necessities, which labour leaders say have significantly eroded workers’ purchasing power.

Labour unions argue that the current minimum wage of ₦70,000 is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of an average Nigerian worker, as the cost of food, transportation, housing, and utilities continues to rise.

According to labour representatives, the proposed ₦154,000 is a more realistic figure that reflects current economic realities and would help workers maintain a reasonable standard of living.

The development is part of ongoing conversations around wage review, as previous negotiations between the government and labour unions have often ended in deadlock due to disagreements over acceptable figures.

Earlier demands by labour had gone as high as ₦615,000, while government proposals remained significantly lower, highlighting the wide gap between both parties.

Experts say the renewed push underscores the growing pressure on the Federal Government to revisit wage structures in light of persistent inflation and economic challenges.

The outcome of these discussions is expected to have far-reaching implications for workers’ welfare, government spending, and the broader Nigerian economy.
