The Oyo State Government has conferred the title of Justice of the Peace on 345 citizens, cautioning recipients to treat the honour as a responsibility to serve, rather than a status symbol.
The Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, while speaking at the conferment ceremony held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan described the title as a constitutional responsibility that must be exercised with integrity and discipline.
He warned that the honour is withdrawable if abused, urging the newly appointed Justices of the Peace to study the guidelines carefully and avoid exceeding their legal mandate and advised them to verify documents thoroughly before administering oaths or endorsing papers, stressing that the office must not be turned into a business venture.
Also addressing the gathering, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, said the role of a JP goes beyond social recognition and represents a commitment to fairness and justice at the grassroots.
He emphasised that the state maintains a zero-tolerance stance on abuse of office and urged the appointees to act with humility while promoting the rule of law.
