President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police (IGP), presidential aides confirmed on Tuesday.
The development followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Mr Tinubu asked Egbetokun to step aside, according to sources. A formal announcement was said to be in preparation.
Security officials and media reports indicate that Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu — currently in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Lagos — has been selected to succeed Egbetokun as the new IGP.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force and the presidency were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023. His continued tenure had been the subject of public debate after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 and remained in office following an amendment to the Police Act.
